Scouts roll into action with fun bowls night

SCOUTS from across Salisbury swapped campfires for curling bowls as they took to the green for a lively evening of sport and new skills.

Young people from the 3rd Salisbury (Sea Scout) and 4th Salisbury (Harnham) troops were invited to a special taster session at the Five Rivers Indoor Bowls Club on Friday, April 10.

For many, it was their first time trying bowls – and they quickly discovered there is more to the game than meets the eye.

After an introductory coaching session, Scouts learned how the bowls are designed with a bias, causing them to curve across the rink depending on how they are delivered.

They were also introduced to the structure of the game, including team roles such as Skip, Lead, Second and Third, as well as key terms like the “jack” – the small target ball — and the “rink”, the playing area.

Once up to speed, the Scouts and their leaders put their new knowledge into practice with a friendly match, bringing plenty of laughter and a touch of competition to the evening.

Diane Makepeace, from Five Rivers Indoor Bowls Club, said the group was a welcome addition to the venue. She said: “Five Rivers enjoyed hosting the Scouts.

“We strongly believe in providing youngsters with opportunities to try a new activity and have welcomed several groups of youngsters over the Winter Season”.

Scout leaders said the session was a great success, giving young people the chance to step outside their comfort zones and try something completely different.

Mark Warner, team lead of Harnham Scouts, said: “I would like to thank the Five Rivers Bowls Club for hosting the taster session. The Scouts were able to try a new sport and thoroughly enjoyed the evening”.

The event is part of ongoing efforts to give local young people access to a wide range of activities; proving that even traditional sports like bowls can strike a chord with a new generation.
