Smoothies, spokes and sustainability at Salisbury eco festival

FROM pedal-powered smoothies to free bike repairs, Salisbury’s biggest eco festival is gearing up to take over Queen Elizabeth Gardens this weekend.

People in the Park returns on Saturday, May 16, promising a packed day of sustainability, live music and community activities between 10.30am and 4.30pm.

Among the attractions this year will be a major cycling hub bringing together some of Salisbury’s best-known biking groups and volunteers to encourage more people to get out on two wheels.

Visitors will be able to meet organisations including the Cycling Opportunities Group for Salisbury (COGS), Breeze Rides, Salisbury Road and Mountain Cycling Club, Charlottes Tandems and Bikeability trainers.

There will also be plenty of hands-on activities throughout the day.

Volunteers will run free ‘Dr Bike’ safety checks and basic repairs, while visitors can climb aboard Salisbury’s pedal-powered Smoothie Bike and blend their own drinks using pedal power.

A local PCSO will also offer free bike security marking and anti-theft advice from 12.30pm.

Rob Jacobs, chair of COGS, said the event highlighted the passion volunteers have for cycling in Salisbury.

“This event is a great example of collaborative work by volunteer groups in Salisbury who love helping people of all ages get out and about on their bikes,” he said.

“We are really happy to be involved in this event. Why not come along to obtain local information on cycling, get your bike checked for summer, make your own smoothie and have your bike marked at People in the Park.”

Organised by Salisbury Transition City, People in the Park has become one of the South’s largest environmental festivals.

More than 60 stalls are expected this year, alongside food vendors, craft stalls, wildlife groups and three live music stages running throughout the day.

The festival will focus on everything from renewable energy and sustainable transport to wellbeing and greener living; all in the heart of the city.
