Wild Salisbury launched to help residents reconnect with nature

RESIDENTS are being invited to swap screens for stargazing and discover the wildlife hidden in the city’s parks and green spaces as part of a new lottery-funded project.

Wildlife and Wellbeing, a Salisbury-based community interest company, has secured funding from The National Lottery Community Fund to launch “Wild Salisbury” – a programme of affordable nature events running across the city over the next two years.

The project promises everything from bat nights and birdsong walks to fungi events, family workshops and a summer solstice celebration, all designed to help people reconnect with the natural world while boosting mental wellbeing.

Research from Natural England suggests most people recognise nature makes them happier, but only around half feel strongly connected to it.

Project lead Polly Whyte hopes Wild Salisbury can change that. “Salisbury has some incredible green spaces, but much of the wildlife around us goes unnoticed,” she said.

“Wild Salisbury is about helping people slow down, look closer and build a meaningful connection with the natural world.

“We want to thank National Lottery players for their support – this funding has allowed us to subsidise events so they are affordable and open to everyone. Whether your interest is bats, wildflowers, fungi or simply spending more time outdoors, there will be something for you.”

Among the first events planned are a Bat Night at Avon Valley Nature Reserve on June 20 and a Summer Solstice Sunset Celebration at Castle Hill Country Park on June 21.

Wildlife and Wellbeing was founded in Salisbury in 2024 and focuses on using nature to support mental health, wellbeing and environmental awareness.
