Twin town pride as Amesbury installs new gateway signs

NEW signs welcoming visitors to Amesbury are now proudly marking the town’s transatlantic connection with its American namesake.

Amesbury Town Council has unveiled five gateway signs highlighting its official twinning with Amesbury, Massachusetts, a partnership celebrated last summer.

The signs have been installed at key points into the town, offering a visible reminder of the growing relationship between the two communities.

The council has thanked Wiltshire Council Highways for supporting the installation.

The twinning, formally celebrated in August 2025, links the historic Wiltshire town with a city steeped in more than 350 years of history on the east coast of the United States.

Located in Essex County, the American Amesbury sits on the banks of the Merrimack River, close to the Atlantic coast.

First incorporated in 1668, it developed from a farming and mill town into a largely residential community and is home to more than 17,000 people.

Leaders hope the partnership will strengthen cultural ties and create opportunities for shared events, education and tourism on both sides of the Atlantic.

The new signage is the latest step in cementing that relationship, ensuring residents and visitors alike are reminded of Amesbury’s international link.

Town councillors say they are “delighted” with the new additions, which not only celebrate the twinning but also reinforce a sense of civic pride.
