Two early morning fires highlight importance of Wilton station

FIREFIGHTERS from Wilton Fire Station were called into action twice in quick succession, underlining their vital role as concerns grow over proposed station closures.

The on-call crew responded to two early morning incidents miles apart, highlighting the wide area they help to cover.

Yesterday (April 19) at 4.33am, a crew of six was mobilised as a relief team to a domestic fire in Melksham.

Less than 24 hours later (April 20), firefighters were called out again at 5.18am this morning – this time sending a crew of two in a water carrier to support crews tackling a large thatch fire near Sturminster Newton.

The back-to-back incidents, both some distance from Wilton, come as stations across Wiltshire and Dorset face an uncertain future under proposals that could see eight sites shut.

Wilton is among those under threat, with campaigners warning that losing stations could increase response times and put additional pressure on neighbouring crews.

These latest call-outs offer a clear example of how crews are regularly deployed beyond their immediate area – providing crucial support wherever it is needed.

Relief crews play a key role during major or prolonged incidents, ensuring enough firefighters are available to safely manage fires and protect lives and property.

With the consultation on proposed closures ongoing, MPs, residents and firefighters alike have raised concerns about what reduced coverage could mean for rural communities.
