Wiltshire Police step up patrols as heatwave grips county

WILTSHIRE Police said high-visibility patrols will continue across the county this week as extreme temperatures raise concerns over public safety, anti-social behaviour and open water risks.

Assistant chief constable Liz Coles said officers and staff would maintain a strong presence in both urban and rural areas during the heatwave, including town and city centres, beauty spots and places near rivers and lakes.

There will be a continued focus on anti-social behaviour with officers ready to seize alcohol and drugs where appropriate and use powers such as Section 35 dispersal notices against disruptive behaviour.

Police said the move is aimed at keeping people safe while Wiltshire experiences soaring temperatures and a likely rise in visitors heading outdoors to cool off.

ACC Coles said policing services would continue as normal with officers working alongside other emergency services and partner agencies to respond to any issues caused by the hot weather.

The force is urging people to take precautions during the heatwave, including staying hydrated, avoiding too much time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day and checking in on vulnerable neighbours, friends and relatives.

Police are also reminding people to behave responsibly if they are visiting parks, beauty spots or open water sites.

Wiltshire Police said the county remains open and welcoming to visitors – but warned it will take firm action against anyone causing harm or disorder.
