Century-old club crowned best in region

A VILLAGE club that has been at the heart of its community for more than a century is celebrating a major honour.

Netheravon Working Mens Club has been named Club of the Year by the Salisbury & South Wiltshire branch of Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), recognising its role as a thriving social hub north of Amesbury.

The award was presented to chairman Allan Smith, secretary Andy Linscer and long-standing member Gary Davis at a special gathering of members and CAMRA representatives.

Keith Foster, who co-ordinates the branch’s awards, praised the club’s welcoming atmosphere and quality offering.

He said: “Netheravon Working Men’s Club is a worthy winner of the Salisbury and South Wilts CAMRA Branch Club of the Year award.

“As well as serving well-kept real ales, often from local breweries, it offers a warm and friendly welcome to both locals and visitors alike. It is a great asset to its local community.”

Founded in 1920, the club remains a cornerstone of village life – still operating from the same pre-fabricated building it moved to on the High Street in 1925. Remarkably, it even retains the original minutes book from its founding meeting.

Despite facing major challenges over the decades, including the Second World War, the pandemic and financial struggles that once left it just weeks from closure, the club has continued to survive and thrive, thanks in large part to the dedication of its members.

Chairman Allan Smith said: “This is the social hub of the village. We have karaoke on Boxing Day, pool night on Tuesdays, skittles on Wednesdays and bingo on Thursdays.

“Heel Stone, brewed by Stonehenge Ales in Netheravon, is our permanent real ale, and we change the others every two weeks.”

Today, the club offers far more than drinks, hosting regular events, community activities and even acting as a “warm space” for residents during colder months.

From free curry on Remembrance Sunday to talent shows and annual dinners, it continues to bring people together – proving its value to the village is as strong as ever.
