POLICE have warned residents in rural parts of Salisbury and Amesbury to stay vigilant following a rise in burglaries and overnight thefts.
Wiltshire Police said it has seen an increase in reports of break-ins across villages and countryside communities with burglars often taking advantage of unlocked doors and windows.
Officers have said recent incidents included opportunistic thefts from vehicles left overnight, as well as criminals targeting sheds, garages and outbuildings for tools and equipment.
The warning comes as police urge homeowners to review security and avoid making it easy for offenders.
Residents are being advised to lock doors and windows at all times, even when at home, and consider installing motion sensor lighting, CCTV or visible alarm systems.
Police also said valuables should be kept out of sight and away from windows, while timer switches on indoor lights can help make homes look occupied when residents are away.
Drivers are also being urged to take extra precautions after reports of overnight thefts from vehicles.
Officers recommend locking vehicles, removing bags and valuables from view and avoiding leaving car keys near doors or windows inside the home.
For sheds, garages and other outbuildings, police advised using strong locks and security measures, as well as marking tools and equipment with a postcode and keeping photographs or records of high-value items.
Wiltshire Police is also asking residents to keep an eye out for suspicious activity or unfamiliar individuals acting unusually in their area.
Anyone who witnesses a crime in progress or an emergency should call 999.
Non-emergency information can be reported to police on 101, online, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
