Couple shares home to change lives as carers call goes out

FOR 11 years, Kathy and Steve West have opened their front door to something few people ever consider – sharing their home and everyday life to help young people build confidence, independence and a sense of belonging.

Now, as Shared Lives Week 2026 approaches, Wiltshire residents are being encouraged to ask themselves a simple question: could they do the same?

The Shared Lives scheme matches carers with people who need extra support, including adults with learning disabilities, care-experienced young people, people experiencing mental ill health and older residents living with dementia.

Unlike traditional care, support happens in an ordinary family home.

For Kathy and Steve, becoming carers has brought unexpected rewards.

“Shared Lives allows you to work from home and support someone in your own home as part of your daily life,” said Kathy. “You can fit it around other commitments depending on who you’re caring for, and you’re helping someone reach their full potential. It’s a great way to live.”

“We get a lot of fun from it, and we feel part of a team. You meet a great group of like-minded people who want to do something meaningful. You’re making a real contribution, and the satisfaction you get from it is huge.”

Wiltshire Council says the role can fit around busy households, work or retirement, with carers receiving training, support and competitive payments.

Cabinet member for adult social care Cllr Clare Cape said: “You don’t need specific experience – just kindness, patience and a willingness to share your home.”

People interested in finding out more can speak to the Shared Lives team at Salisbury Library on Tuesday, June 16, between 9am and 1pm, or join a live Instagram Q&A on Thursday, June 18, from 6pm to 7pm.
