More dangerous spikes found on Amesbury roads

FIVE more metal spikes have been found on the roads around Amesbury, raising fresh safety concerns for drivers, cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians.

Amesbury Neighbourhood Policing Team officers discovered the hazardous devices, known as caltrops, during targeted foot patrols yesterday evening (March 31) at the junction of West Amesbury and Stonehenge Road.

Each caltrop is designed so that one sharp point always faces upward, making them extremely dangerous to anyone passing over them.

“These items pose a significant danger to road users, including vehicle occupants, pedestrians, horse riders, cyclists, wildlife, and pets,” officers warned.

The discoveries come after multiple reports of similar spikes in the area this week, prompting fears over deliberate placement.

Wiltshire Police have confirmed that patrols in the affected locations will continue and that they are working closely with Wiltshire Council’s Highways Department to keep the roads safe.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the source of the caltrops to come forward. They can be contacted on 101 or via email at AmesburyAreaNPT@wiltshire.police.uk, quoting reference 54260031614.

Residents have been urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity as officers investigate whether the items were placed deliberately.

This latest discovery adds to growing concern over road safety in Amesbury, highlighting the risks posed by seemingly small but potentially deadly objects on public roads.
