POLICE have stepped up action against rogue traders across the Amesbury area after carrying out another targeted operation alongside council officers.
Teams from Amesbury’s Neighbourhood Policing Team joined Wiltshire Council Trading Standards on Tuesday morning (March 18) to patrol a number of communities, including Amesbury, Durrington, Larkhill, Porton, Netheravon and Newton Tony.
The proactive crackdown is the latest in a series of similar operations in the area, as authorities continue to tackle doorstep crime and protect vulnerable residents.
During the visits, officers spoke directly with traders working locally, with several legitimate businesses able to provide the correct documentation without issue.
But the operation also focused on raising awareness among residents, particularly around the risks posed by rogue traders.
Doorstep criminals often target homes by offering urgent or unexpected work on roofs, driveways or gardens, sometimes pressuring people into agreeing to costly and unnecessary jobs.
Police and Trading Standards teams used the opportunity to hand out advice and speak with residents about how to stay safe – urging people not to engage with cold callers and to keep an eye out for neighbours who may be more vulnerable.
The renewed warning comes as reports of rogue traders tend to increase during the spring and summer months, when more people are approached about home improvements.
Residents are being encouraged to report any suspicious activity, even if they are unsure, as early information can help prevent others from being targeted.
Anyone with concerns can contact Trading Standards on 0808 223 1133 or Wiltshire Police on 101. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress, people should always call 999.
