Police issue fire warning after third blaze near Salisbury

POLICE are urging parents to speak to their children about the dangers of setting fires after a series of incidents near Salisbury.

Last month, emergency services were called to a wooded area at Rockshill Plantation, between Jerrard Grove, Longhedge and the A345, at around 9.30pm on May 14 after a group of young people allegedly started a fire before running from the scene.

The blaze was brought under control by firefighters before it could spread, but officers have now revealed that this is the third fire of its kind in recent months – raising fears that what may seem like “harmless fun” could quickly turn dangerous.

Salisbury Police said warmer evenings often mean young people spending more time outdoors, but they are warning families about the potentially devastating consequences of anti-social behaviour.

A spokesperson said: “What might start as harmless fun can quickly escalate into a situation that puts lives at risk and leaves young people with a criminal record.”

Although the fires have been relatively small, police warned a blaze in woodland can become catastrophic within minutes – threatening wildlife, nearby homes and even the young people involved.

Residents living near Rockshill Plantation and Jerrard Grove are being asked to check CCTV or doorbell footage from around 9.30pm on May 14 for any groups moving to or from the area.

Parents are also being encouraged to have open conversations with children about peer pressure, personal safety and the risks of playing with matches or lighters.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101 quoting log 54260057761, email salisburyareanpt@wiltshire.police.uk, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously.
