ANGLERS fishing along the River Avon in Amesbury are being reminded to check they are following the rules after police joined fisheries enforcement officers on patrol at popular local spots.
The neighbourhood policing team teamed up with Environment Agency Fisheries Enforcement Officers for joint patrols at fishing sites including Lords Walk and Ham Hatches, speaking to anglers and carrying out rod licence checks.
The patrols focused on making sure people fishing in the area were doing so legally, with officers also sharing advice on fishing seasons, local rules and safety.
At Lords Walk, free fishing is allowed on the River Avon between the road bridge and the first footbridge, but anyone aged 13 or over must have a valid rod licence.
Licences are free for under-17s.
Anglers are also reminded that all fish must be returned to the water and night fishing is not allowed.
Police said fishing outside the permitted season is a criminal offence.
The current trout season runs from April 1 to October 15, while the coarse fish season runs from June 16 to March 14.
The patrols come as officers continue to work with partner agencies on issues affecting the city’s waterways and public spaces.
Anyone new to the sport or looking to get involved is being pointed towards Salisbury & District Angling Club, which offers free Get Fishing sessions for under-18s, as well as junior memberships and support for beginners.
Officers are also urging anglers to follow what they describe as the “six golden rules” of fishing – including caring for fish, protecting the environment, treating others with respect and making sure they are fishing legally and safely.
