Easter fire warning as crews fear blazes

FIRE crews are urging people to take extra care this Easter as warmer weather and school holidays bring more visitors into the countryside.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued a seasonal warning, highlighting the increased risk of fires on heathland, in woodlands and around homes as people make the most of the sunshine.

Firefighters are particularly concerned about barbecues, campfires and discarded cigarettes sparking blazes in dry conditions.

They are urging people to avoid using disposable barbecues in open spaces, properly extinguish cigarettes and never throw them from car windows.

Anyone who spots a fire in the countryside is being told to call 999 immediately and provide as much detail as possible about the location.

Landowners are also being reminded to prepare for fire risks by maintaining fire breaks and carefully managing any controlled burns.

At home, residents are advised to keep water nearby when using a bonfire or barbecue and to ensure hot coals are fully extinguished before disposal.

Group manager Greg Izon said: “The combination of the school holidays and good weather will see people out and about a lot more, and we want to be sure that the local area stays as safe as it can be for everyone.

“If you’re visiting our heathlands, woodlands or countryside, please avoid having a campfire and take a picnic rather than use a disposable barbecue – just a few simple steps can make a real difference to preventing fire from starting.

“We’d also remind people to take care if having a barbecue or bonfire at home. All too often, we see property destroyed when an initially small fire suddenly gets out of control.

“Never leave a bonfire or barbecue unattended, and site them well away from fences, trees or buildings.”
